Title: Cognition, Agency, and AI: Designing Courses for Learning

Description: AI’s rapid integration into students’ lives creates a new pedagogical challenge: how do we guide AI use to build understanding and agency, rather than outsource thinking? Reframing AI from a policing problem to a course design challenge, we’ll draw on emerging research about AI’s cognitive and social impacts to navigate teaching with AI. Through hands-on experimentation and collaborative inquiry, participants will explore a spectrum of AI uses and translate insights into practical course design strategies. This workshop welcomes diverse disciplines, experience levels, and perspectives: from enthusiasts to skeptics, beginners to advanced users.

Presenter: Carie Cardamone

Carie Cardamone supports faculty and institution-wide initiatives to transform teaching, learning, and curriculum across disciplines. She brings expertise in the implications of generative AI for student learning and educational practice, learning science-informed pedagogy and assessment.  Carie employs both quantitative and qualitative approaches in her research on educational innovations and development, assisting faculty in applying scholarly practices to their roles as educators.  Trained as an astrophysicist and educational researcher, Carie brings prior experiences as an Assistant Professor of Astronomy at Wheelock College, a Postdoctoral Fellow in Physics at MIT, and an Associate Director of Sciences at Brown University’s teaching center.
